cool bird, warm back ground

key concept
warm and cool color/contrast

warm and cool are describe the temperature of color. they are different, warm and cool, that means that they are contrasted. artists use contrast to manipulate your eye, move your eye to look at what they want you to see, or look at the focal point. Van Gogh was a master at this as was Matisse and then the Pop Artists, like Andy Warhol.

objectives
a) sw use warm color positioned next to cool color
b) sw experience using color contrast

procedure
a) review primaries
b) review secondary’s
c) let students mix primaries to make secondary’s. use oil pastels
2nd session
a) draw some birds primary or secondary warm or cool paint back ground the contrast. paint bird as per a contrast
b) use 6 x water color paper for background. oil pastel for birds. add beaks legs feathers with sharpie.
c) discuss what color works.

Even in his portraits, Van Gogh used Contrast between warm and cool color.
And Matisse used contrast sparingly. Look at all the blue and that little bit of orange. Where did you look?
